I'm putting on an event at my high school and I need to know what kind of plant is hardy enough to survive a California winter and doesn't require much maintenance. it also has to flower at least once a year (preferably it flowers around now). Zinnias maybe? I really don't care about the maintenance factor as much as I care about them being able to handle the "cold'. Also I need to be able to plant them now not last spring. And one more thing, they can't be bushes.
Choosing the right kind of flower. Help please!?
try perrenials which are xeric. There are gardening places on the web which can tell you which zone you're in. Which makes it easier to choose. The one I have used out of New Mexico is High Country Gardens. They have good stock. Good variety. and you can find plants appropriate for whatever area you are.
Reply:I think there would be a long list for this situation. It would be helpful to know whether you are going to plant lots of them and where, or just one and where and for what purpose. Shasta Daisies, Zinnias should be fine, Gazanias, CA Poppies, Geraniums, there must be tons more, but I no longer garden in CA and have forgotten what is so popular there. Look around and ask questions of other gardeners near you and it should be easy. Good luck!
Reply:You have confused me.. YOu said that they should bloom at least once a year and then you mention zinnias... Zinnias are an annual plant.. the other plants you alluded to are perennial plants.. that is plants that remain in the ground and bloom later. Zinnias will not last the winter.
Lantana(white.. or purplel.. or yellow... or mixed colors) are great for flowering almost year around and some even in the winter time. Do not know if you can grow Mexican bird of paradise or not but they are a beautiful plant
