so on March 10, 2008 i started a zinnia. i put one seed in a 9 oz. plastic cup. i placed the seed in the correct depth and a little towards the side. it has been 12 days and not 1 but 4 little sprouts are coming up!!! they look like zinnia blooms, but is it possible to have four? i used some potting soil and the seed was packaged in 2004 does that matter?

Sounds like the potting soil had some seed in it, not uncommon at all. You should have had only one plant with one seed, so more likely it is weeds sprouting.
